How to pick the perfect lighting for your dining table?

Ever sat down for dinner only to realise your lighting is either blindingly bright or so dim you can barely see your plate? Not exactly the mood you were going for, right? The right lighting above your dining table isn’t just about seeing your food - it sets the whole vibe. Whether it’s a lively dinner party, a quiet breakfast, or a work session that somehow ended up at the dining table, getting it right makes all the difference.

Here’s how to get it just right

  • Round tables: A single central pendant light is your best bet. Think of it as the spotlight for great conversation (and delicious food).

  • Rectangular tables: Multiple pendant lights or a long, linear fixture work wonders. It’s like framing the table in just the right way - functional and fabulous.

Size matters

  • The light should be half the width of the table. Too big, and it’ll feel like an interrogation room. Too small, and you’ll only light up your plate (not your dinner guests). For round tables, you can go a bit wider than half the table’s diameter - this creates a softer, more enveloping glow that feels warm and inviting.

  • Height is key: Hang your light 60-80 cm above the table for the perfect balance. The higher it is, the softer and wider the light spread—ideal for a relaxed dining experience.
  • High ceilings? Adjust accordingly so the proportions stay right. You don’t want your light fixture floating awkwardly in space.

Want the ultimate dining glow-up?

Dimmable lighting is a game-changer. Crank it up for working or homework sessions, soften it for a cozy dinner, and go extra low for those long, wine-filled conversations.

Lighting should work for you, not against you - so play around, find the right balance, and make your dining space shine. Want more lighting tips? Drop me a message, and let’s chat all things light!
