The fabric makes the sofa

The shape sets the style, but the fabric makes all the difference when it comes to comfort and maintenance. Here are a few tips to help you make the right choice without the overwhelm.
Check the Martindale rating
This indicates the durability of the fabric. For home use, look for a rating between 15,000 and 25,000 rubs. Higher ratings are typically used for hotels and offices, but if you want extra peace of mind, go for it.
Got pets?
A tightly woven fabric is your best bet. It prevents claws from catching. Bouclé and other textured fabrics may look stunning but are a bit more delicate.
Considering removable covers?
Sounds practical, but for sleeker designs, it can be tricky to get the cover looking smooth again after washing. A professional cleaning service might be a simpler and stress-free solution.
Check the fabric composition
Wool naturally repels dirt. Cotton and linen have a lovely natural feel but are more prone to stains. Many fabrics now blend natural fibres with synthetics, making them stronger and easier to maintain. Bonus: more and more collections are made from recycled materials—stylish and and sustainable.
And don’t forget about colour
If your sofa sits in direct sunlight, darker fabrics may fade faster. Lighter tones hold up better in bright spaces, while patterned fabrics are great for camouflaging everyday wear.
A new sofa is an investment. With the right fabric, it will stay beautiful—and practical—for years to come.
